What’s in a Name? Reflections from EGU and the Next Steps for eDNA4Hydro

A Special Thanks to everyone who helped make eDNA visible at EGU 2026
Thank you to everyone who participated in the eDNA4Hydro-related activities at EGU! The conference was an incredible opportunity to connect with the community, share ideas, and further our understanding of eDNA’s role in the geosciences. From the engaging sessions to the stimulating splinter meeting, it was clear that there’s a growing interest in integrating eDNA into a broader geoscience context.

Key Highlights from the Vienna

  • Exciting Presentations: We were thrilled to see such a strong lineup of speakers sharing their research, insights, and experiences with eDNA in hydrology and beyond. A round of applause to all who took the stage and sparked valuable discussions!
  • Overcrowded Short Course: The eDNA short course was a resounding success, drawing a full house. We hope this enthusiasm translates into a wave of submissions for next year’s conference sessions.
  • Early-Morning Splinter Meeting: Despite the early hour, the enthusiasm was clear. The discussions are shaping the identity of our group.

Framing Our Future: Beyond eDNA4Hydro?
One of the most compelling takeaways from EGU was the broader interest in expanding the scope of our network. Some attendees and speakers suggested that our name, eDNA4Hydro, might be limiting in its current form. To encompass our growing reach into other geoscience disciplines and beyond, we’re considering options to make our network more inclusive, particular towards sediment transport and other earth surface processes. Additionally it came up the “eDNA”, might be too narrow and perhaps we should expand to include all of “omics”?

What do you think?

Join us for the first Meeting on June 9th (5pm CEST)
To delve deeper into these questions and more, we invite you to our inaugural meeting of the (still-to-be-defined) eDNA4Hydro working group/community of practice/network (what are we?).

General Agenda :

  1. Networking Welcome & Introduction
  2. Timeline of the group so far
  3. In-Progress Projects
  4. Building the Network from the Ground Up **i.e., when we talk about the name!
  5. Future Plans & Community Input
    • Do we want to start a community paper?
    • Get funding for a workshop or for our network?
    • Who wants to write some blog posts, organise a webinar or paper discussion series?

Registration and Reminders

  • To receive the Zoom link for the meeting (and future updates), please join our mailing list. We’ll send a reminder with the link on Monday, June 8th.
  • If you can’t come next week, still join the newsletter and hopefully you can join soon. If you would like to get involved in the mean time, shoot us an email.

Best wishes and looking forward to seeing you (virtually) on June 9th!
on behalf of the core group,

Natalie
